Our Story

When our son Jack was born with Down syndrome, we found out we had a lot to learn. Not just about the best way to nuture our child so he would grow up as healthy as possible, but about the whole world of special needs. One thing we learned, children born in some countries who have special needs generally don't go home with their mom & dad. They go to baby orphanages. We have decided to adopt one of these little angels, a beautiful girl with Down syndrome. We found our new daughter through an organization called Reece's Rainbow. They advocate for these little ones, trying to get them into the arms of their forever families. Please go visit. There is a button on the left. These children will touch your heart.

Cardiology Appt – check

Today was Miss D’s heart check up.  She passed with flying colors!  Awesome!

Here’s the interesting part – her open heart surgery repairs are the SAME ones as what Jack had!  Now we can’t tell if she also had the PDA closure that Jack did, but she had the VSD patch and ASD stitches the same as Jack.  I couldn’t believe it.  And the Dr said the repairs look great.  The repairs done in Ukraine!  If I didn’t know that we actually brought her home from there I don’t know if I would believe it.  She’s chunky (26.8 lbs) and she has had an excellent ohs.  After being home just over 2 mos she eats and sleeps well, she’s learning signs, and acts like she’s been here since birth.  Have I posted a pic of her scar?  It’s beautiful.  Everyone that has seen it has been impressed.  It’s nice and thin and straight.

Might as well post about how she’s doing in other areas too.  She’s starting to stand independently for just a second at a time and stand up from a low stool and take a little step or 2.  She is also starting to walk holding one hand, a few feet at a time.  She’ll walk for long periods holding both hands.  She picks up almost any sign we show her and dances to music (so funny!).  No words but plenty of sounds (just like Jack).  We’re still working on proper play with toys instead of just heaving everything she gets ahold of across the room.  She knows what to do with a phone though (play or real)!  Her hair is growing enough that I’m thinking about trimming the back.

And today she looks like this:

Precious, precious, precious!  I’m so thankful we fought through all the doubt and fear and worries!
