Our Story

When our son Jack was born with Down syndrome, we found out we had a lot to learn. Not just about the best way to nuture our child so he would grow up as healthy as possible, but about the whole world of special needs. One thing we learned, children born in some countries who have special needs generally don't go home with their mom & dad. They go to baby orphanages. We have decided to adopt one of these little angels, a beautiful girl with Down syndrome. We found our new daughter through an organization called Reece's Rainbow. They advocate for these little ones, trying to get them into the arms of their forever families. Please go visit. There is a button on the left. These children will touch your heart.

Day 14 (trip 2)

Fri, Dec 3.  Got up at 2:30am!!  Got ready and woke both girls up.  Both of my daughters!  Who were both going to be american citizens by the end of the day!  We were picked up by 3:30am and got to meet another mom Amy and her little girl Zoe who were already in the car.  We got in line to check in for our flight and who did we see in front of us?  Mike & Meredith!  Yay!  We all were on the same flight to Frankfurt.  M, D and I ended up sitting by a family who are missionaries in Ukraine and were going back to the US for a few months for the holidays.  The 2 little boys were a hoot!  Typical 7 & 8 yr olds :).  Dasha cried when we first got on the plane but was a great traveler after that.

We had a couple hours layover and went to board the big flight to Chicago.  M & M were on that flight too and sat in front of us, and the family with little boys sat behind us so that was nice.  The boys kept borrowing me and M’s Nintendo DS’s so that was fun.  So boring!  Dashlyn slept the first few hours and then spent most of the time just rolling around on her seat.  We put her between me & M so she really had plenty of space.

Still not really interested in eating but she had lots of warm water that the flight attendant thought I was crazy for asking for!  By the end of the flight we were so glad to get off the plane!

We made it through customs ok but then the 3 of us headed over to immigration where we ended up sitting on the floor for over an hour before they called our name.  We’d hoped to hang out with Mike & Meredith a little more but certainly didn’t expect them to wait that long for us to come back.  We had a terrible time at the Chicago airport.  We didn’t have boarding passes so we had to wait through line after line.  M & I were seriously worried we wouldn’t make it to our flight home.  They were boarding by the time we got to the gate but we made it!

The flight home was short but D was done!  She fell asleep right after take-off and was mad when I tried to get her coat on her after landing :(.  She slept in the stroller through the airport and all through her first car seat ride and seeing her actual home for the first time.  We finally gave up and put her in jammies and to bed right after 6pm.  We have no pictures from the airport or arriving at home.  Apparently it was not a big deal to those left at home.  There were no “welcome home” signs, balloons, nothing.  Oh well, we were happy to be here anyway.  Miss D slept in the pack ‘n play in her new room and she slept great – all night :).

  1. Glad to hear you made it safely! (I mean I knew you were home, but glad to hear about the trip.) Gives me a little bit of an idea what to prepare for, esp in O'Hare, as we'll be going through there too... Home Sweet Home!!!

  2. I'm so glad to hear that you have your sweet daughter home safely. I've always heard that if it's meant to be (whatever "it" is) then it will happen. And obviously, you guys were meant to make it home! Airport travels are never fun, but I'm just glad she was so good for you! WELCOME HOME!

  3. Ugh- no signs, balloons, nothing?! My mom had the video camera and lots of happy waves for us! C'mon, your family should have kissed your feet after the crazy journey you had to bring your daughter home!!! :) Wasn't the customs thing at the airport crazy??? We waited almost an hour just to talk to the guy for barely 5 minutes.

    So glad you're HOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Happy Holidays!!!!!
    xoxo, Kari
