Our Story

When our son Jack was born with Down syndrome, we found out we had a lot to learn. Not just about the best way to nuture our child so he would grow up as healthy as possible, but about the whole world of special needs. One thing we learned, children born in some countries who have special needs generally don't go home with their mom & dad. They go to baby orphanages. We have decided to adopt one of these little angels, a beautiful girl with Down syndrome. We found our new daughter through an organization called Reece's Rainbow. They advocate for these little ones, trying to get them into the arms of their forever families. Please go visit. There is a button on the left. These children will touch your heart.

Attachment and Bonding in Adoption

That’s been a big topic on the post-adoption board I follow.  Before we brought Dasha home, I expected the worst but hoped for the best.  Allan and Madelyn fell head over heels with her right away.  Jackson immediately loved having a new and permanent playmate.  Andrew and Tyler also had a fairly easy time accepting her into our family.  And I was kind of in the middle – very much in love but not immediately attached, if that makes sense.  Now I can’t get enough of her!  She gets 50,000 kisses a day because I have to try to make up for all those days, months, years, we didn’t have her here.  As for Dasha, she loves us back, I’m sure.  But again, I’m not 100% convinced she would miss us if she went to live in another family.  She’s happy to see us/me when she wakes up or I pick her up from school.  But she’s happy with whoever picks her up and plays with her too.  I can’t get our extended family to understand the bonding process and just because she’s a happy little girl they think they can treat her like Jack, and I really feel that’s not the case.

When are you coming Erin??  We need to talk!

Her ear tube/sedated teeth cleaning appt is coming up, she’s been primarily walking for a couple of weeks, and her signing is getting better.  She uses a few spontaneously now!  Shall we check on the cuteness?

Apparently, these are our “kitchen table” series of pics!  Maybe I should be making sure to take pics when she’s not in a chair!
